Global investment in AI startups reached a new quarterly record of $42 billion in Q1 2025. The figure reflects sustained investor conviction in AI despite growing scrutiny on valuations and differentiation at later funding stages.

Fastest-Growing Verticals

• Healthcare AI: Growing 3x year-over-year. Key applications include radiology AI, drug discovery, genomics interpretation, and clinical decision support systems.
• Physical AI and Robotics: Warehouse automation, surgical robotics, and autonomous systems attracted significant capital as large language models began enabling more flexible robotic control.
• Agentic AI: Systems that take multi-step autonomous actions — viewed by investors as the next major platform shift beyond chatbots.

Largest Round: Anthropic $4 Billion Series E

The largest single raise of Q1 2025 was Anthropic's $4 billion Series E, valuing the company at $60 billion. The round was led by Google with participation from Spark Capital. Anthropic said it planned to double its safety research headcount and accelerate model development.

Growing Selectivity

Despite record total funding, investors at Series B and C reported increasing scrutiny of revenue, margins, and technical differentiation. AI application companies that compete primarily on thin wrappers around foundation model APIs found fundraising more challenging in 2025 compared to 2023–2024.
